Rorion & Royce Gracie Torrance Academy
This letter from Rorion Gracie is hanging
on the wall of the Torrance Academy
Royce Gracie Defender of the Gracie Challenge.
Just like spring water is crystal clear when it leaves the source and it keeps getting muddier as it fills the river, Grandmaster Helio Gracie, has directly or indirectly taught every Jiu-Jitsu practitioner in Brazil.
I don't believe in luck, therefore, there must be a reason why I was the first born to the Brazilian David who faced more than one Goliath.
Unlike everyone else in Brazil, I spent my first 27 years living in the same house and working at the same place, as my father. I was drinking straight from the source. I was mastering not only the science of fighting, but more importantly the art of teaching. After graduating in Law 15 years ago, I decided to come to America to teach the Jiu-Jitsu I knew.
I soon realized that the arm bars, chokes, locks, & throws I brought from Brazil were not much different than their American counterparts.
That is when it dawned on me that the uniqueness of my Jiu-Jitsu was not based simply on those chokes and locks, but rather, on the way those techniques were applied. As if that were not enough, I was shocked at the way I saw other people teaching.
My father not only perfected the application of traditional Jiu-Jitsu moves. He created a revolutionary teaching method. The man is a " Genius" .
That was when I decided to register the service mark ``Gracie Jiu-Jitsu «.'' This mark does not represent a different martial art, but instead it symbolizes a teaching method so advanced that we can teach virtually anyone. With so many people thirsty for knowledge " The Gracie Way" , it is only natural that a wave of so called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and ground fighting " experts" will swell.
I predict a flood of muddy water from a legion of " experts" who have been drinking too far from the source.
